SKYE HATTEN PHOTOGRAPHY: {and she’s off…}

written last night…

Five and a half years ago, I was certain to be leaving the hospital with a baby boy in my arms. I mean really, I was only going to be a “boy mom” and I think I had myself pretty prepped for what was to come with a rough and tough little boy. Well, I would soon find out that a baby boy was NOT what I had growing in my belly. It was a beautiful baby girl who would immediately change my world. Turns out, I was indeed meant to be a mother of a little girl who would be into those little girlie things…babies, princesses, dancing, drama and pink, oh lots of pink. She is spunky and sassy and her little body holds a heart bigger than the sun. I’m crazy about that girl. Tomorrow, we embark on a new adventure as she will begin her first week of Kindergarten. Tomorrow, I will hug her, kiss her and wave to her and she will turn her back to begin yet another little journey. My only wish is that she’ll have a blast and that she’ll also know that no matter what, her mom will be behind her and supporting her and will always be there to catch her in case she falls. Love ya, sweets.

(we took these a couple days early so I could just focus on that first day “stuff”…)

Oh, Will. What can I say about Will?? He’s a good guy – he’s funny, he’s smart…he pretends to enjoy getting his picture taken! Love that! I heard from a small bird that he was a bit reluctant to go through this whole senior photo process. From what I heard, he would have been content having his parents take a picture of him in their back yard, brush their hands together and call it a day. Little did he know that he was going to HAVE A BLAST! (It’s my story and I can tell it how I want.) In all seriousness, he did great, actually, really great and I had a ton of fun putting this session together (you ought to meet his folks – they’re sweeter than sweet AND a kick in the pants!). As for my words of advice after this session: When hiking up hills with a cross-country runner, be sure to come up with conversation questions that require long responses so that you do not have to talk and attempt to appear as though you’re not wheezing and gasping.

For inquiring minds, what you see here is a wall arrangement in our downstairs family room comprised of 2-16×20’s (canvas), 1-11×14, 2-8×10’s, 1-10×20, and 2-5×7’s.

Now, this little cute family has been with me from the beginning, the VERY beginning. They can’t go further back as they were the very first for me. It has been three years and I can still remember plain as day where I was when I offered to take these little girlies’ pictures. I knew that I would have to start somewhere and looking back, I know I was nervous with this offer. Ah heck, I have to admit I STILL get nervous with my sessions!! So, here we are three years later with me talking this crew into looking lovely in some of Butte, Montana’s finest neighborhoods. I think they had their doubts when we showed up here. And awwwwwe, let’s not forget the sweet aroma of burning chemicals near by. I only scope out the best for my sessions. They’re troopers though and come to find out, I think they WERE putting their best game faces on!

O Family – I can’t thank you enough for your continued support with this crazy ride I’m on…you guys have been the best! Hope you like what you see – I had a blast spending the morning with you!

This little girlie is going to be seeing a birthday in three days (six going on twenty-six!) – this one’s for you girl!

Yep, folks, that would be how many grand kids I had the opportunity to photograph at this session…crazy, yes, but I have to say, what an experience I’ll treasure. These little critters are SO loved by their grandparents…you could just feel it. Oh, and I figured out what makes them laugh…you know the bent-over, boisterous, explosion type laugh…allow me to let you in on this photographer trick. You’ll want to walk backwards looking like you’re trying to get the shot and “pretend” that you stumble into your stool and nearly flip over backwards in front of, oh, say, 20 people or so. Don’t thank me for disclosing my secret…truly, my treat. I’ve tried it, well, once, and it works like a charm.

Thanks SO much, Vickie and family, for the opportunity to put this “little” session together…there are a bundle of images to go through…can’t wait for you to see them!

So, just an ordinary day in the Hatten household. Only one minor detail that was a wee bit out of the ordinary. My little man decided to get up a wee bit earlier than usual, which resulted in earlier than normal sleepiness. I thought we would definitely have an early lunch so he could get an early nap. Well, someone just couldn’t quite make it through the 6 minutes it took me to make lunch before he was out stone cold in the recliner in our living room. So, I did what any other mom would do in this position…I posed him like a newborn and took his picture. Let me just say that if I was really mean, I would have scrounged through all my newborn photo gear and had a ball but instead I decided to simply relish in his sleepy state and lose myself just loving this “baby” boy.

As promised…back with the official sneak peek from her session. I can’t say enough about this girl…she’s funny, she’s driven, she’s smart…she truly just has all those qualities you would want in your own children. I couldn’t have been more tickled that I was able to put this session together for her. We have had this one in the books for ages and what a treat to see it come alive…thanks A…you really have so much to be proud of. I absolutely cannot wait for you to see the rest of your images!

And the bartender says, “Why the long face?” HA! HA! I’ll bet you NEVER heard that one before! Sometimes I crack myself up. Like right now. I’m completely cracking up…ha! Okay, so, I have to say that I’m not a horse person – surely not because I do not like them but more so because I didn’t grow up with them and haven’t had a ton of exposure to them. I have several friends who have and adore horses and ride them A LOT; however, I’m just a city girl. I grew up in the city…you know, population 2,500. City. I don’t know, I just felt like saying that. HA! Yet again, I’m so stinkin’ funny…only in Montana is that classified as a city, I suppose. I digress. Stick with me. Focus. What’s with the horse talk, you ask?? Well, let me explain. Last night, I had the opportunity to photograph a very sweet senior girl. Currently, we’re only half complete as in good ol’ Montana fashion lately, we got rained and “winded” out. Fortunately, I had scoped out an AMAZING location that I was extrem-0 excited to use. Unfortunately, we only had about 5 minutes of my favorite light before some clouds moved in. And now back to “fortunately,” we were able to get some images that made my heart jump up and down; however, this was not without an audience. Insert two horses and 100,000 mosquitos.

So, I’m loving what I’m seeing….

Now look at her face… (potentially a wee bit concerned)

Well, now that would be the profile of a horses nostril in my lens. Oh, and look at her face again. Hmmm, why am I not sensing any concern???

Now, for her turn. Hee hee. I giggle at this because I wasn’t quite ready a second prior to this. One second ago, I looked up and I saw two horses lips nibbling on the top of her hair…a photograph seemed only appropriate at this time. Btw, how stinkin’ cute is SHE?!!

My abs are still a bit tender today from laughing so hard last night! I would say though that our adventures were beyond worth it for the ability to capture moments like this…

Some days are just a bit rougher than others and you know it wasn’t so bad when you just look back at it and just laugh. I’m not sure I can explain it adequately but between Little Miss stepping in dog poop, my Little Man aggravating her each and every second he had, big tears from her out of frustration, Little Man taking a series of ink stamps and covering his entire body, which required a bath, AND noticing fresh warm pee on my carpet approximately an inch from the linoleum in our bathroom from my weiner dog (whom we don’t usually have much for house training issues) who didn’t find much interest in going outside as it was looking like it was going to rain. This required immediate cleanup with the addition of Little Man attempting to close the bathroom door on my legs and taking no reservations in stepping over me as I’m trying to clean it up. I think he was indeed attempting to ride on my back all the while shouting “giddy-up horse.” This followed by me asking Little Miss to get her shoes on as we were going to be headed out the door to a friends house for dinner…a minute passes and she somehow got something in her eye, which actually is kind of bad because it ended up being irritated all evening. I’m a little bit concerned about it but am hoping it’s a bit better after resting it over the night. Needless to say, it has certainly just been one of those days. On the highlight list though was holding my little buddy as we left the park before lunch and he of course had his thumb in his mouth with one hand and it melted my heart that he was rubbing my back with the other. As for Little Miss, cuddling her up tonight, teasing her, and seeing her sweet smiles even though she kept her eyes closed the whole time. I’m just crazy about those little turkeys.

As for some pics, I just wanted to share some more from this session. Their little family of four is pure sunshine.

That’s how many years it has been. Nine amazing years. I’d be lost without him. Happy Anniversary, Mr. Hatten…I still love ya more than my luggage.
