written last night…

Five and a half years ago, I was certain to be leaving the hospital with a baby boy in my arms.  I mean really, I was only going to be a “boy mom” and I think I had myself pretty prepped for what was to come with a rough and tough little boy.  Well, I would soon find out that a baby boy was NOT what I had growing in my belly.  It was a beautiful baby girl who would immediately change my world.  Turns out, I was indeed meant to be a mother of a little girl who would be into those little girlie things…babies, princesses, dancing, drama and pink, oh lots of pink.  She is spunky and sassy and her little body holds a heart bigger than the sun.  I’m crazy about that girl.  Tomorrow, we embark on a new adventure as she will begin her first week of Kindergarten.  Tomorrow, I will hug her, kiss her and wave to her and she will turn her back to begin yet another little journey.  My only wish is that she’ll have a blast and that she’ll also know that no matter what, her mom will be behind her and supporting her and will always be there to catch her in case she falls.  Love ya, sweets.

(we took these a couple days early so I could just focus on that first day “stuff”…)

The possibilities are endless!  Most importantly, how about showcasing your family and offering a “feeling” at the same time???  Life IS truly art…

For inquiring minds, what you see here is a wall arrangement in our downstairs family room comprised of 2-16×20’s (canvas), 1-11×14, 2-8×10’s, 1-10×20, and 2-5×7’s.

So, just an ordinary day in the Hatten household.  Only one minor detail that was a wee bit out of the ordinary.  My little man decided to get up a wee bit earlier than usual, which resulted in earlier than normal sleepiness.  I thought we would definitely have an early lunch so he could get an early nap.  Well, someone just couldn’t quite make it through the 6 minutes it took me to make lunch before he was out stone cold in the recliner in our living room.  So, I did what any other mom would do in this position…I posed him like a newborn and took his picture.  Let me just say that if I was really mean, I would have scrounged through all my newborn photo gear and had a ball but instead I decided to simply relish in his sleepy state and lose myself just loving this “baby” boy.

And the bartender says, “Why the long face?”   HA! HA!  I’ll bet you NEVER heard that one before!  Sometimes I crack myself up.  Like right now.  I’m completely cracking up…ha!  Okay, so, I have to say that I’m not a horse person – surely not because I do not like them but more so because I didn’t grow up with them and haven’t had a ton of exposure to them.  I have several friends who have and adore horses and ride them A LOT; however, I’m just a city girl.  I grew up in the city…you know, population 2,500.  City.  I don’t know, I just felt like saying that.  HA!  Yet again, I’m so stinkin’ funny…only in Montana is that classified as a city, I suppose.  I digress.  Stick with me.  Focus.  What’s with the horse talk, you ask??  Well, let me explain.  Last night, I had the opportunity to photograph a very sweet senior girl.  Currently, we’re only half complete as in good ol’ Montana fashion lately, we got rained and “winded” out.  Fortunately, I had scoped out an AMAZING location that I was extrem-0 excited to use.  Unfortunately, we only had about 5 minutes of my favorite light before some clouds moved in.  And now back to “fortunately,” we were able to get some images that made my heart jump up and down; however, this was not without an audience.  Insert two horses and 100,000 mosquitos.

So, I’m loving what I’m seeing….

Now look at her face… (potentially a wee bit concerned)

Well, now that would be the profile of a horses nostril in my lens.  Oh, and look at her face again.  Hmmm, why am I not sensing any concern???

Now, for her turn.  Hee hee.  I giggle at this because I wasn’t quite ready a second prior to this.  One second ago, I looked up and I saw two horses lips nibbling on the top of her hair…a photograph seemed only appropriate at this time.  Btw, how stinkin’ cute is SHE?!!

My abs are still a bit tender today from laughing so hard last night!  I would say though that our adventures were beyond worth it for the ability to capture moments like this…

I’ll be back again with an “official” sneak peek for this girlie once we finish Part 2.

That’s how many years it has been.  Nine amazing years.  I’d be lost without him.  Happy Anniversary, Mr. Hatten…I still love ya more than my luggage. ;)

Yes, it’s crickets you hear.  I have been traveling across the beautiful Black Hills in South Dakota with my crew for the past week.  I absolutely cannot express how much I enjoyed this little treat of a vacation.  I would have to say that this was our first “official” family (of four) vacation.  I couldn’t get enough of taking pics of my own kiddos and it really is funny how life changes.  Vacations are officially now all about what is going to make them smile because that is what indeed makes us happiest, eh?

If you are waiting on an email or inquiry response, please don’t think that I’ve forgotten about you…I’m back in action starting Monday.

For now, I thought I would post some more images from this session…still a favorite for me!  How sweet can a little family be?!!

Okay, so it seems like an eternity that I’ve been working on this post.  I have something so very exciting, well exciting for me, to share.  I have been looking forward to something very special for months now and last week, well, it happened!  No, my house didn’t start magically cleaning itself and no, my skin didn’t turn to porcelain.  Even better!  Let’s just say my three most amazing moments have included that moment I knew Mr. Hatten was my guy, the birth of my baby girl, and the birth of my baby boy.  AND NOW I have something to add…the JinkyArt workshop retreat!  It rocked my world.  For those who do not follow photography, Barb Uil is the mastermind behind the Australian based JinkyArt Photography.  Not only has she inspired every other photographer (including me!) with her most amazing way of capturing the moments and the details we long to see again and again, but she’s also a profound teacher, so transparent and open, and is so stinkin’ funny that I couldn’t help but be whole-heartedly entertained for two and a half straight days.  She made 12 hours fly by in what felt like 15 minutes.  The kicker about this workshop was the fact that Barb traveled from Australia to Montana’s very own little town of Hamilton, which truly was a dream.  The workshop was held at the Meadowbrook Farm, which is the most quaint and amazingly beautiful fully restored farm house and grounds…I had to pry my white fingertips from the banister to head home.  It was all because of the lovely Teresa, whom with her family, gets to spend their days gazing at all this beauty.  If you haven’t checked out her blog, you ought to.

Anyway, the retreat was filled with endless knowledge and so very much fun.  I have to say that I’ve been a bit scattered this week as I’ve had to come back to reality from my star-struck state of awe.  On an even more positive note, I have images to share from the several sessions we had to opportunity to partake in.

Life on the farm…I wish I had taken more…she’s a beauty. ;)

1. Train graffiti fascinates me.  It just does.  Don’t quote me but some of it is actually really good!
2. I’m really not much of a fan of spearmint…why does ANYONE like it?
3. R&B music from the 90’s, yep, still like it.
4. American Pickers on the history channel is a new favorite…if you haven’t watched it yet, you’re missing out.
5. There was a time as a kid that I collected mechanical pencils and hot wheels cars.
6. I love pepperoncini peppers.
7. I have crazy, uncontrollable eyebrows.  They really can’t be tamed.
8. I can recite the alphabet backwards in under 5 seconds.
9. I’m a stickler for good quality shoes.
10. Men really should shave their armpits…what IS the point of all that stuff under there?

AND as for the intention of this blog post, just wanted to share some more from this session…I’d say he’s a keeper, eh??

Just wanted to drop in and wish everyone a Happy 4th of July.  I do have to admit that I haven’t really been into fireworks in years but now that I have kiddos, it’s starting to wear on me again.  For as busy and curious my littlest buddy in the house is, I can’t help but be a bit surprised by how tightly he grabs my leg at the sound and sight of fireworks.  I have a feeling that he may be in bed before the festivities begin but Little Miss is ready to go!

Anyway, off to a fun-filled family day but just leaving you with some pics of this little lady (here too)…yes, folks, living proof that they just don’t stay tiny forever…how about that smile??!

I had to steal this one of Mr. B…

Okay, so I have typed something completely pointless and deleted it probably twenty times now as I attempt to write SOMETHING.  I sit here eating my cookie dough ice cream (second bowl!) pondering the verbal content of this blog post.  The reason?  This week is certainly just one of those weeks…way too busy and just not enough of that quality time I thrive on.  I’m not going to lie, if there is something that is signature about me, it’s “quality.”  Yes folks, I only buy good shoes and good towels.  It’s just the way it is.  Most importantly though, I long for quality time and if it just isn’t happening, I’m crazy!  Enter this week.  Beyond busy.  On the positive note, I’m starting to see the light and if anything, it has been a reminder to chill a bit and just “be” with the ones you love…time marches far too quickly not to.

Thought I would post some more from this session.  Lately, I have had this mindset of imagining what people will think of photos so many years down to road.  With these, truly, twenty years from now, something tells me that they may still bring a smile or two…loved these ladies!
